Is it safe to get a massage when pregnant?

I am a certified prenatal and post natal massage therapist which gives me the knowledge and understading of the unique considerations and safety precautions associated with pregnancy. Prenatal massage is generally considered safe throughout most of pregnancy, but it's advisable to wait until you're past the first trimester (12 weeks) before getting a massage. The first trimester is a critical time for fetal development, and it is often prefered to avoid any potential risks during this period. Before attending your treatment you will be asked to complete a pre-consultation to check there is no specific medical history or any underlying health conditions to determine whether massage is safe for you. It may be that you are asked to consult with your midwife or consultant before hand.

What to expect from the treatment?

To treat your back you will lie on your side with pillows supporting your body to ensure comfort and safety. This positioning minimizes pressure on the abdomen and keeps you and your baby secure. You will then be positioned in an upright position to treat the other areas of the body. A soothing and Vitamin E enriched bump mask will be applied to the abdomen to help with the appearnace of stretch marks. The massage can also be tailored to your needs working on specific areas of concern.

Postpartum massage

I am also certified in providing post partum massage (up to 6 months after birth). This will help aid in recovery and alleviate muscle tension and stress associated with childbirth. Cesearean scar tissue massage can also be provided where gentle stretching and myofascial release techniques are used. The goal is to break up adhesions and improve blood flow to the scar area. By releasing tension and adhesions in the scar tissue, this type of massage can enhance the range of motion in the abdominal area and reduce the appearance of the scar.
